Practice, not hobby.

Documentary work since 2006. A few series carry the rest — these are the ones that started things, and the one still going.

2017–present

Lighting the Trails

An ongoing documentary project photographing mountain bike trails at night. Trails usually experienced in motion are rendered still and considered, using light and darkness to map the space. The crossover of two long-running practices: riding and photography.

A lit suspension swing-bridge curves away across a bush gully under a star-streaked night sky.
A long-exposure ribbon of light traces a coastal trail down a moonlit ridge above the sea.
A dark forest trail lit from within, lined with faint coloured marker lights through the trees.

Smoke Signals

A documentary project on the Christchurch boy-racer scene, produced as a photographic book and awarded A+ as a final-year self-directed project. One of a run of early studies of youth subcultures.

Night car meet: a skyline sedan does a smoky burnout while a passenger leans out a window, arm raised, as a crowd watches through the haze.
A young woman sits in the driver's seat of a parked car at night, watched through the window by a figure in the foreground.
Daytime drag strip: a person stands arms-outstretched beside a '100' distance marker as a car vanishes into a vast cloud of tyre smoke.
